Deodorant Will Help You Achieve Your Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals

There is a wealth of information available on goal setting. There are worksheets, workshops, books, lectures, classes, articles, videos, TED Talks and webinars. HUGE amounts of information.

I participated in a lunch & learn event once where the speaker introduced us to the “BHAG” or “Big Hairy Audacious Goal.” I really love how descriptive that term is and the visual it conjures in my brain. My perspective is a little different though. Maybe, just maybe, the key to achieving goals isn’t just to have BHAGs but to better understand the processes we use to get big and hairy.

As a young actor, my professors taught me how to break down a script into scenes and beats. They taught me to develop a process to move through the words on the page a to create living, breathing and believable human beings. Because it is a process, it’s repeatable for every script, regardless of genre, venue, writer or costars. I have taken to calling this “Big Goal, Little Goal.”

BGLG is applicable to life. It is the process of accomplishing little tiny, micro goals that move you forward to accomplishing the next level of goals. Deodorant is a great example of Big Goal, Little Goal.

Let’s say you set a goal to get a promotion (and accompanying raise) at work by the end of the year. In order to make that happen, you understand that you have to show up at work, participate, engage and be a generally stellar and contributing human. Showing up requires that you transport yourself from your home, to your job. Before you complete that transport, you have to awaken on time, shower, dress and eat a little something. Hopefully, for all our sakes, deodorant is an integral part of the dressing process. It’s a key ingredient in putting together your personal presentation, which can dramatically effect your confidence, which can directly effect how you are perceived, which directly effects the value you are thought to bring, which can have a direct and substantial effect on the promotion and raise goal.

Deodorant. It can change the world.

This is the beauty of BGLG. When you step back from the gargantuan, Herculean task of goal achievement and create the processes by which you get from “A” to “A.5” instead of to “Z,” your intentions and ambitions become more manageable and more easily attained. Putting on deodorant is a necessary and valuable step in world domination.

Go ahead. Dream of the BHAGs. Think of the world you want to exist. Then build the achievement processes one tiny, little structural baby goal at a time. And if you forget the deodorant, the stink is all on you.
